Welcome to the conference! A road map for the day.
Identifying and managing eating disorders are key elements of providing comprehensive primary care.
The understanding of how best to manage eating disorders has undergone a substantial evolution over the past decade.
By focusing on identifying which patients could be at risk of developing eating disorders, the factors that could trigger this development, and the factors that may prevent recovery we will aim to provide delegates with a toolkit for early intervention with affected patients.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a significant, underserved but significantly prevalent health challenge in Australia.
There are many barriers to care including cost, the expertise and awareness of the caring doctor of ADHD as a significant health challenge, and access to specialist care.
Further, ADHD and eating disorders often occur together, with children with ADHD being at three times the risk of disordered eating.
You will learn how to screen for ADHD and eating disorders in general practice, how to provide initial management, and how to provide access to formal assessment and ongoing specialist care.
Childhood ADHD is a significant issue; early diagnosis and management is key to providing a pathway to the development of a child’s full potential. In this presentation and associated paediatrician-led workshop we will highlight the importance and impact of childhood diagnosis, the key steps of management, and the role of the GP in the caring team as a patient grows from childhood to early adulthood.
ADHD and ED are often associated with other pathologies and possible biological causes of symptoms must be evaluated.
When assessing a patient prior to psychiatrist review, a thorough medical and mental health history with appropriate investigations is essential.
This session will aim to provide attendees with the skills to ensure patients can access a time-appropriate, thorough and focused psychiatric assessment.
You will also learn which tests to arrange prior to psychiatric assessment to ensure prompt treatment can be initiated, what essential information must be on the referral to a psychiatrist, and how to efficiently arrange an Eating Disorder Plan to ensure comprehensive management.
Effective management of ADHD and eating disorders requires the input of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). At the end of this session you will understand how an MDT approach works: you are not alone!
Following specialist diagnosis, managing patients with ADHD in primary care, both with medications and psychological support, is becoming increasingly common. Hence it is essential that GPs understand the process of medication initiation, optimisation, and monitoring for adverse events. Ensuring access to the appropriate Medicare funded services is also key. From this presentation, you will learn the different medication initiation options and doses, how to monitor for and manage adverse events, and how to work closely with psychiatrist colleagues.
Transition to adult medical services can be a challenging point in any patient’s life and ADHD is no different. This presentation, presented from a psychiatrist’s point of view, will build on the prior paediatric case highlighting the challenges of long term management with a patient moving through different life stages. An associated workshop will provide a small group opportunity to discuss cases based on common clinical scenarios.
The key ADHD medications are strictly controlled and an understanding of the different rules and regulations is key to safe clinical practice.
Further, rules vary from state to state and differ with regard to who can initiate medication, how permits to prescribe are processed and approved, and how GP should work under a co-management arrangement with the treating specialist.
From this presentation, you will learn the arrangements under which primary care doctors can work with specialists to provide timely and cost effect access to ongoing care.
ADHD and ED care is a dynamic and evolving field of practice. Many significant and imminent changes are anticipated from both a regulatory and governmental standpoint. This concluding session aims to summarise the key learning of the day and to discuss some possible key developments in practice to be anticipated and planned for.
